# 1701 Ruckle Buckle
***Patent Pending***

Ruckle Buckles are used to easily create loops on the ends of straps. This is particularly handy when you want to tie something down. Simply take the excess strap emerging from the end of the Ruckle Buckle and wrap it around your tie point. Next, tuck it back into the Y-slot on the face of the buckle and then pull tight to secure: Tada! You have a loop. The Ruckle Buckle can also be surface mounted and used as a simple and unique attachment for pocket flaps or pouches.

The #1701 RB is currently available in black and NIR tan.

For a practical application, please see our Compression Strap project.

How it works:

The unique “Y” shaped face of the Ruckle Buckle is the key to its design. This distinctive contour allows the loop to be easily opened and closed. Bow the web’s edges inward between your fingers and insert the narrowed web strap into the face of the buckle. Now pull on the newly created loop to lock the strap in place. The strap cannot loosen because the sewn folds at the end of the tab are pinched inside the buckle. Pulling back and up on the tab end of the web strap backs the folded section out of the buckle allowing it to release.

As seen here (circled in red), Ruckle Buckles can be used to securely lash cut and sew pieces, such as a belt, to a pack frame.

Why It Works:

The Ruckle Buckle is designed to take advantage of the adaptive properties of web straps. When a single section of web strap is folded back on itself and sewn together, the physical properties of that section of the strap are changed in three ways: 1) It’s cross-section is increased; 2) It’s stiffness lengthwise is increased; 3) It’s stiffness widthwise is also increased. Multiple sewn folds amplify these effects.

The loop formed by the Ruckle Buckle can be passed around or through an item such as a pack frame.

To lock the Ruckle Buckle, the strap is pinched slightly and fed in.

A small tug locks the strap in place.

Now the Ruckle Buckle loop can bear load (upwards of 300lbs. depending on how the strap is set up).

To release the Ruckle Buckle, simply pull the loop up and away in a stripping motion.  Some tension is required on the strap.  The Ruckle Buckle remains easy to release, even under heavy load.

Now the strap can be reattached or moved easily.

Resizing the loop created by a Ruckle Buckle is simple.

Open the Ruckle Buckle by stripping the loop.

Now adjustments in size can be made by feeding the strap through the slots in the bottom of the Ruckle Buckle.

Once you have the size you want, pull the strap tight again.

Now your newly sized loop is ready for use.
